GROUP VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES
2010 Events and Short-term Volunteer Positions
SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER
Compassion Society in Burlington: I have an older lady who lives in a small apartment; her living room is quite bare with just a table, chairs, TV and old sofa. The unit was not painted before she moved in and she has been there I think 10 years. It needs a freshen up. It is quite depressing to be quite honest. I asked her if I could find a group to paint her living room would she be happy. She said it would be a lovely gift of their time and company. Team of 5 to 8 maybe, one day commitment, if they could buy the paint it would be great!
We could also have a group organize clothes at Compassion Society. Up to 7 people, one day event, possibly on a Thursday as that is the day we are closed and we could get ahead and really tidy up the baby section.

Oakville Labour Day Half Marathon, 10k and 2k Run is taking place on Monday September 6, 2010 at Coronation Park, Oakville. Help is needed on Monday at the event, from 6am to 1:30pm. Groups are needed to help at aid stations-passing water and Gatorade to runners and assisting participants when needed. This is a great way to showcase your business/group/organization as we can name the aid station after your group and you can wear matching outfits that display your team/group/organization name.
Also, individual volunteers are needed to act as course marshals along
the course, help with handing the medals at the finish, assist with food
distribution and fulfil other roles. The Oakville
Hospital Foundation is the Charity Partner for this event.

The Halton Environmental Network will be holding a Renewable Energy Fair this fall and it would be something that would be appropriate for a group to be involved in. Their previous events have included exhibits by solar and geothermal vendors as well as workshops on renewable energy.
It would likely only be a one-day event on a weekend. Location and date have not yet been arranged.

MS Society of Canada, Burlington has a project that just might suit a small group. They are looking to repaint our office and with touches of inspiration on the walls...by stencilling. So yes, it might seem a bit of an odd task to have an office painted but the words of inspiration are unique.
MS Society has a small office environment but many of their support groups and volunteers work out of there and it is important to them that they have a welcoming environment.

Halton Food for Thought is working on to promote this kind of group activity. In the meanwhile they have done some fun team building events. It depends on if the company is willing to spend some funds as well. So for instance they have gone apple picking or fruit picking (depending on the time of year) and then the company has brought the fruit to a chosen program(s) and helped volunteers prepare the items for the school nutrition program.
Or a company can do a food drive and then donate the specific products (we have a list of products) to a chosen school.

Community Living Burlington is currently looking for company/group volunteers to help them with painting, gardening, etc., in one of their 26 residential homes. Each of the houses supports 3-5 individuals with a developmental disability. Sometimes is difficult to maintain each house to its full capability (keeping up with painting, weeding, etc.,) due to their non-profit budget and look to companies in the community to help with volunteer work.
Currently, they have 2-3 homes that are in desperate need of painting and gardening! If the volunteers are interested, they can spend the day at one of our residential homes and help with painting bedrooms, hallways, garage doors, etc., or they can help with gardening, weeding, etc., It’s a fun day for all and we will provide all of the tools and paint necessary to get the job done!
