Teens Organizing Local Entertainment for Seniors (TOLES) group was co-founded in 2004 by the Harmgardt siblings, Julie, Simon and Andrew. Since its inception in 2004, TOLES has put a smile on the faces of hundreds of Oakville senior citizens.
TOLES' goal is to bridge the multi-generational gap through the world of entertainment. In today's transient society, many adolescents don't have the luxury of living in close proximity to their own grandparents and opportunities to interact with seniors are rather limited. TOLES fills this niche twofold - the teens bask in the seniors caring and warmth while discovering that seniors are a source of living history and the seniors loneliness is alleviated by the exuberance and energy of the youthful, talented group.
Each spring and fall TOLES visits local seniors' residences throughout Oakville, performing an hour-long themed variety show. The talented troupe includes musicians, singers, actors and jugglers. After the show the TOLES cast visits with the seniors... renewing old friendships and fostering new ones. In June 2009, TOLES celebrated their 50th variety show at The Kensington Seniors Residence in Oakville.
Over the past seven years TOLES has presented 70 variety shows visiting the following seniors residences a multitude of times: The Kensington, Churchill Place, Sunrise Assisted Living, Oakville Seniors Citizens Residence, John R. Rhodes Seniors Residence, The Waterford and Post Inn Village.
Over the past six years many different teens have taken part in TOLES. Some members have done only one show, while others have performed in all fifty. Although, the TOLES cast has changed throughout the years, current performers include:
Julie Harmgardt, Simon Harmgardt, Emma Smith, Lara Isaac, Jarred Gour, Austin Wright, Darcy Schnarr.
In 2007, TOLES group was nominated for the Oakville Spirit Award in the Youth category.
